Welcome to May 14, 2022. For some reason, the word “Empathy’ is stuck in my brain. It’s the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It’s hard because I only really know me. I don’t know what it’s like to be a minority, a woman, homeless, poor, gay, and on and on. I only know me. That means I need to be slow to judge what other people do because I don’t know what they think or feel. I’ll climb off my soap box now. Today is National Buttermilk Biscuit Day, Dance Like A Chicken Day, American Indian Day, World Buckfast Day, and Dylan Thomas Day. He said “An alcoholic is someone you don’t like who drinks as much as you do.” On this day in 1607 English colonists established the 1st permanent English settlement in America at Jamestown. This is the day in 1796 that an English country doctor named Edward Jenner made the first inoculation against smallpox using liquid from a cowpox blister. In 1878 Vaseline was granted a patent. On this day in 1908 the first passenger flight in an airplane took place. Finally, on this day in 1932 “We Want Beer!” parade was held in New York City. Prohibition ended in 1933. This is the day in 2015 that B.B, King stopped playing the Blues. B.B. said, “A day that I don’t learn something new is a wasted day.” Next is H. Rider Haggard who was the author who died in 1925. He said, “It is not wise to neglect the present for the future, for who knows what the future will be?” I’ll end with August Strindberg who was a Swedish author. He said, “I find my joy of living in the fierce and ruthless battles of life, and my pleasure comes from learning something” and “Growing old-it’s not nice but it’s interesting.” Abide.
