The sign reads 09.20.2022. I woke up this morning thinking about the decisions I’ve made that put me on the path to reach this place. Life’s a journey. The older you get, the easier it is to look back and understand how your choices changed the course of your life. Most people don’t recognize the life changing impact at the time. At least, I didn’t. I’m just glad I made the decisions I did. Today is Get Ready Day, National Care for Kids Day, National Fried Rice Day, National Gibberish Day, National String Cheese Day, National Punch Day, and National Pepperoni Pizza Day. Maybe it’s a good day to order in a pizza for dinner? Now some historical footnotes: On this day in 1519 a Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan set sail in the 1st successful circumnavigation of the globe. Magellan didn’t live to see the end of the trip. On this day in 1664 Maryland passed the 1st anti-amalgamation law to prevent intermarriage of English women and black men. On this day in 1830 the 1st negro Convention of Free Men agreed to boycott slave-produced goods. On this day in 1881, Chester A. Arthur was sworn in as the 21st President. I didn’t know anything about him so I checked. His biggest accomplishment was reforming the Civil Service to hire people based on merit instead of patronage. On this day in 1926 Bugs Moran attempted to assassinate Al Capone in a drive-by shooting but missed. On this day in 1946 Winston Churchill argued for a United States of Europe. In 1961 on this day African American student James Meredith was refused enrolment to the segregated University of Mississippi. Today’s dead person quotes from Jim Croce who died too soon in 1973 at the age of 30. Jim said, “If you dig it, do it. If you dig it a lot, do it twice.” “If I had a box just for wishes and dreams that had never come true, the box would be empty, except for the memory of how they were answered by you.” He also observed, as I have, “it’s what we’ve done that makes us what we are.” Have an excellent day. Abide.
