It’s now the 7th day of February in the time/space of 2020. Everyone on Facebook seems to be pissed off at someone. Fortunately, that’s not my problem. As the saying goes, “Not my circus, not my monkey.” I can choose moral indignation or not. I pick the not. Life is too short to waste a day of happiness. Especially when it’s Bubble Gum Day, Give A Kid A Smile Day, Wear Read Day, National Fettuccine Alfredo Day, Send A Card To A Friend Day and Rose Day. This post will serve as my card sent to you, my friend. Now, let’s look at the history of this date: In 1812 on this date, a 8.2 earthquake shakes New Madrid, Missouri. That’s a very big quake. Also In 1812, the poet Lord Byron makes his maiden speech in House of Lords. I bring this up so I can quote him, “Death, so called, is a thing which makes men weep, And yet a third of life is passed in sleep.” True enough. In 1845, the Portland Vase, thought to date to the 1st century BC is shattered into more than 80 pieces by a drunken visitor to the British Museum. Think of that moment… wow. In 1944 Bing Crosby records “Swinging on a Star”. In 1949 Joe DiMaggio becomes 1st $100,000 a year baseball player for the New York Yankees. On this date in 1964 the Beatles land at NY’s JFK airport, for 1st US tour. Finally, in 1974 Mel Brooks’ film “Blazing Saddles” opens in movie theaters starring Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder. Here’s a Gene Wilder quote: “I’m going to tell you what my religion is. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Period. Terminato. Finito.” That’s a good church to attend. This is the day in 1804 when John Deere was born. He is the person who said, “Strike while the iron is hot”. A few years later in 1812, Charles Dickens was born. He said, “Bring in the bottled lightning, a clean tumbler, and a corkscrew.” I like that quote. That’s enough for today. Don’t let politics steal today’s happiness. I not going to. Abide.
