Only the 2nd day of August 2020 and a hurricane has hit Florida. Not as bad as it could be. It will stay off shore as it moves North and that means, we will only have rain and medium winds for a day or so. Could be a lot worse. Yesterday I read an article that said, based on the data, that if you’re in a group of 50 people there’s a 90% chance that someone has the virus. 100 people, 100% chance. That’s where we’re at. I’m going to celebrate today’s events with my soul mate. We can select American Family Day, Dinosaurs Day, Friendship Day, International Forgiveness Day, National Coloring Book Day, Sisters’ Day, Psychic Day or my pick, Ice Cream Sandwich Day. Not the best list I’ve ever seen but I don like ice cream. This is the day in 1100 King William II of England (William Rufus) is killed by an arrow shot by Sir Walter Tyrell while hunting in the New Forest. The King wasn’t wearing his orange vest. On this day in 1776 the formal signing of the US Declaration of Independence by 56 people takes place. Each understood that if they were unsuccessful, they would be executed. On this day in 1865 Lewis Carroll publishes “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. He said, “I can’t go back to yesterday – because I was a different person then.” And on this day in 1943 Lt John F. Kennedy’s PT-boat 109 sinks near the Solomon islands. Today is the birthday (1924) of novelist James Baldwin. He said, “The most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose.” He also said, “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.” In those two quotes, he tells us why generational poverty is dangerous for a society. This is the day in 1859 that Horace Mann, American education advocate, dies at 63. Horace said, “Let us not be content to wait and see what will happen, but give us the determination to make the right things happen.” He’s right. We decide what the future will be. Abide.
