December 18, 2021 is upon us. I’ve been waiting my whole life for this day. I will be able to say the same thing about the 19th when it arrives. Today is going to be an adventure if I decide to make it one. I will see new things if I look for them. It’s a little like having a Marvel Comic character’s superpower. December 18th has a lot of special occasion days: it’s Answer the Phone Like Buddy the Elf Day, Bake Cookies Day, National Roast Suckling Pig Day, International Migrants Day, National Wear a Plunger on Your Head Day (?), Arabic Language Day, Flake Day, National Twin Day and Ham Salad Day. I’m going with Buddy the Elf because it’s one of my favorite Christmas movies: Moving to the way back machine: In 1719 Thomas Fleet published “Mother Goose’s Melodies For Children”. If you ever see an old book with that title at a garage sale, buy it. Here’s one: “3 men went to sea in a bowl, if the bowl had been stronger, this poem would be longer”. On this day in 1796 the 1st Sunday newspaper was published (Baltimore Monitor). This was a dark date in 1917 when the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution, authorizing prohibition of alcohol was passed. On this day in 1949 the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Los Angeles Rams 14 to 0 to win the NFL Championship. The game was played in LA in a driving rain which turned the field into one big mud pit. This is the day in 1997 that the comedian Chris Farley died at the age of 33. Chris said, “First off, I am 35 years old, I am divorced, and I LIVE IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!”. On of my favorite SNL skits. This is also the day in 1971 that the legendary golfer, Bobby Jones died. I’ll end this post with this quote: “Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies.” I hope you decide to make today an adventure. Abide.
