It is the 29th day of November 2022. We have only 32 days left before we reach the time/space designated as 2023. I have high expectations for next year. I intend to squeeze as much fun and happiness as I can out of it. My motto will be to “do it now while I still can”. That is the future and I’m in the present which happens to be the Customer is Wrong Day, Electronic Greeting Card Day, Giving Tuesday, National Chocolates Day, National Lemon Crème Pie Day, National Square Dance Day, and Throw Out Your Leftovers Day. That’s a pretty good list. It has both chocolate and pie in it. Now to the history of today. On this day in 1349 the Jews of Augsburg, Germany (around 100) were massacred after being blamed for the Black Death. On this day in 1781 the crew of the slave ship Zong murder 142 African slaves by dumping them into the sea to claim the insurance. On this day in 1870 compulsory education was proclaimed in England. This is the day in 1864 that the Colorado militia killed about 150 peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians at Sand Creek. On this day in 1916 the US declared martial law in the Dominican Republic. On this day in 1933 the 1st state liquor store was authorized in Pennsylvania. On this day in 1944 the first open heart surgery was performed at Joh Hopkins in Baltimore. This is the day in 1961 that the Freedom Riders were attacked by a white mob at a bus station in Mississippi. November 29 is an ugly day for history. Moving on. Todays quotes come from the Beatles guitarist George Harrison. George said, “You can be standing right in front of the truth and not necessarily see it, and people only get it when they’re ready to get it.” “I used to think that having many material things would increase one’s stock of happiness. I found that to be completely untrue. The trappings don’t make the man at all.” The last quote happens to be George’s last words: “Love one another.” Good advice. Abide.
