March 14, 2022. When I woke up this morning a song, I wrote 15 years ago, was playing in my mind. The end of the chorus is “may you go to bed each night / happy with what you’ve done / and always make the time to have some fun.” That was a good plan then and it’s a good objective for each day now. Today is Celebrate Scientists Day, Learn About Butterflies Day, National Potato Chip Day, Save A Spider Day (not), National Write Your Story Day, White Day (think chocolate) and Pi Day. I would rather celebrate “Pie Day” instead of Pi Day. I’ll have to go with chips and white chocolate. Now to history: In 1794 on this day Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin machine which revolutionized the cotton industry in the South. On this day in 1903 the 1st national bird reservation was established in Sebastian, Florida. On this day in 1907 Japanese workers are prohibited from entering the USA. On this day in 1950 the FBI’s “10 Most Wanted Fugitives” program began. This is the day in 1973 that future US Senator John McCain was released from a North Vietnamese prisoner of war camp. Now to the wisdom of people from the past. Stephen Hawking died on this day in 2018 and said, “What I have learned from life is to make the most of what you have.” Next is Edward Abbey who was an author, essayist and environmental activist who died in 1989 and said, “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.” I’ll end with a quote from Karl Marx who died on this day in 1883 and said, “Surround yourself with people who make you happy. People who make you laugh, who help you when you’re in need. People who genuinely care. Everyone else is just passing through.” Abide.
