The calendar reads April 18, 2022. I don’t really need to remind you that this is a brand new, never lived before day. Just like every other one in your life. I just did. It’s my way of reminding myself not to take this day for granted. Today happens to be Income Tax Pay Day, Boston Marathon Day, National Animal Crackers Day, National Transfer Money to Your Daughter’s Account Day, International Amateur Radio Day, Newspaper Columnists’ Day, and Piñata Day. Now to the history of this day. In 1775 Paul Revere and William Dawes rode from Charlestown to Lexington warning the “regulars are coming!” On this day in 1861, fighting ceased in the American Revolution, eight years to the day when it began. In 1861, Colonel Robert E. Lee turned down the offer to command Union armies. As we now know, he made the wrong choice. On this day in 1879 the trial of Standing Bear-Crook on Native American’s citizen rights began. Standing Bear won the right to become recognized under the law as a person entitled to civil rights. On this day in 1906 the San Francisco earthquake and fire killed nearly 4,000 while destroying 75% of the city. Finally, in 1924 the 1st crossword puzzle book published by Simon & Schuster. On this day in 1955, Albert Einstein stopped living. Albert said, “Weak people revenge. Strong people forgive. Intelligent people ignore” and “The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.” I’ll wrap up this day with a quote from Louis Howe who died in 1936. Louis was reporter and an advisor to FDR. He said, “Each day we have the opportunity to learn something new, apologize for our mistakes and become better.” Now, go have some fun today. Abide.
