We have reached the 26th day of January, 2024. My entire life has led me to this day. I will treat it with the respect it deserves. I’m certain that I’ll make memories today. Hope they are good ones. The holidays are Dental Drill Appreciation Day (don’t think so), National Big Wig Day, National Fun at Work Day, National Green Juice Day, National Peanut Brittle Day, National Pistachio Day, and Spouse’s Day. We only have today and tomorrow left in Kiss a Shark Week. Now a few historical footnotes associated with this day. In 1784 Ben Franklin expressed unhappiness over the eagle as America’s symbol. On this day in 1838 the Myall Creek Massacre took place when the New South Wales Mounted Police murdered 50 indigenous people. Seven of the police were later charged, found guilty and hanged making them the first ever punished for killing Australian Aboriginals. On this day in 1905 the world’s largest diamond, 3,106-carat, was discovered in South Africa. On this day in 1920 Henry Leland sold the Lincoln Motor Company to Ford Motor Company. On this day in 1960 when 17-year-old Danny Heater scored 135 points in a high school basketball game. In the 32 minute game he made 53 field goals, 29 free throws, grabbed 32 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. Today is Paul Newman’s birthday so I’ll end this post with his quotes: “A man can only be judged by his actions, and not by his good intentions or his beliefs. “ “What could be better than to hold your hand out to people less fortunate than you are?” “It happens to everybody, horses, dogs, men. Nobody gets out of life alive.” “Being on President Nixon’s enemies list was the highest single honor I’ve ever received.” Last one: “You got to have two things to win. You got to have brains and you got to have balls.” I’m sure he’s suggestion a willingness to take risks. Abide.
