March 6th, 2021. So far March has been a good month. The vaccines are being distributed and that means “normal” is around the corner. My hope is that Covid will not mutate into something worse that is vaccine resistant. People who don’t get vaccinated will be responsible for that. Enough said. This happens to be Alamo Day, Dress In Blue Day, National Frozen Food Day, National Oreo Cookie Day and White Chocolate Cheesecake Day. That’s a yummy lineup of things to celebrate which I won’t because I’m in a losing weight mode right now. On this day in 1831 Edgar Allen Poe was kicked out of West Point for disobedience of orders. He refused to attend formations, classes, or church. It’s Alamo Day because this is the day in 1836 that the Alamo fell. After 13 days of fighting 1,500-3,000 Mexican soldiers overwhelm the Texan defenders, killing 182-257 Texans including William Travis, Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett. In 1857 in the Dred Scott Decision, the US Supreme Court on a 6 to 3 vote ruled Africans cannot be US citizens. This decision was overruled by the 14th Amendment passed after the Civil War. This is the day in 1899 that “Aspirin” (acetylsalicylic acid) was patented by Felix Hoffmann at German company Bayer. This is the date in 1945 that George Nissen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received a patent for the trampoline. This is Rob Reiner’s birthday. Rob said, “The most important thing is that you be a good person and you live by the golden rule of do unto others. If you live by that, that’s all I care about.” I agree with Rob. This is also the day that Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr, a Supreme Court Justice died in 1932. He said, “The mark of a civilized man is his willingness to re-examine his most cherished beliefs.” That’s something I try and do often. I may be civilized? Enough for today. Abide.
