09.01.2021 is the milepost for today. We have started our journey through this section of space. We’re still in the pandemic and there’s a chance of a major hurricane or two. I’m not worried about either because worrying won’t do any good. I’m going to live in the moment and enjoy this wonderful, once in my lifetime day. This is American Chess Day, Chicken Boy’s Day (it’s a statue in LA), Emma M. Nutt Day (1st female telephone operator), Ginger Cat Appreciation Day, National Cherry Popover Day, National No Rhyme or Reason Day, Pink Cadillac Day and National Tofu Day. I’m one of those people who actually likes tofu, but I’d pick the cheery popover in head to head competition. This is the day in 1752 that the Liberty Bell arrives in Philadelphia. In 1894 on this day a wildfire destroys the town of Hinckley, Minnesota, killing 438 people. This is the day in 1897 that the Boston subway opens, becoming the first underground rapid transit system in North America. On this day in 1923 a magnitude 7.9 earthquake strikes Tokyo and Yokohama in Japan, killing 142,000 people. On this day in 1941 all Jews in Germany are required to wear a yellow Star of David in public. Today is Edgar Rice Burrows birthday. He wrote Tarzan of the Apes. He said, “You are here for an instant. You mustn’t take yourself too seriously”. Hard to argue with that observation. 100 years from now, nobody will care what you did today. In fact, nobody will remember you at all. Your very existence will have been reduced to an entry on a genealogical road map for future generations. Some of you may find this depressing. I don’t. To me it means that you and I are free to do whatever you want with this day. I don’t know about you but I’m going to try to have some fun. Abide.
