Welcome to September 14, 2023. I will make memories today. Our Parrot Head Club is having a golf outing to raise money for Alzheimer’s in honor of Rob Ainsley, who was our Vice President and passed a few months ago. I will have fun doing good while remembering a friend who’s left. I’m going to have a good day. I could also celebrate Eat a Hoagie Day, Gobstopper Day, Live Creative Day, National Coloring Day, National Cream Filled Donut Day, National Sober Day, and Support Latino Business Day. Now some history: On this day in 1812 the Great Fire of Moscow began as Napoleon approached the city. Retreating Russians set it on fire. This is the day in 1814 that Francis Scott Key wrote the poem “Defense of Fort M’Henry” which would become “The Star-Spangled Banner”. On this day in 1947 US Marines under General Scott enter Mexico City (Halls of Montezuma). In 1899 on this day Henry Bliss became the 1st recorded US death from an auto accident when he was hit by a taxicab in NYC. On this day in 193- the Portsmouth Spartans, now known as the Detroit Lions, played their first NFL game and won 13-6. On this day in 1944 the Great Atlantic hurricane hit New England and 3 to 4 hundred people died. On tis day in 1955 Little Richard recorded “Tutti Frutti”. The dead person’s quotes today come from the author James Fenimore Cooper who said, “Advice is not a fit, but a debt that the old owe the young.” “Ignorance and superstition ever bear a close and mathematical relation to each other.” “Should we distrust the man because his manners are not our manners, and that his skin is dark?” “tis hard to live in a world where all look upon you as below them.” “Everybody says it, and what everybody says must be true?” That’s enough for this day. I hope your day is as good as mine will be. Abide.
