June 7th, 2022. Did you know that the halfway day of the year is June 2? We are officially on the downside of 2022. In the second half of this year, I’ve got lots of fun stuff planned, places to go, people to see, music to listen to, great food to eat, drinks to consume and lots of parties to attend. In the words of Jimmy Buffett, “How did I get this lucky?” “I don’t know and I don’t care”. Today is Daniel Boone Day, June Bug Day, VCR Day and my pick, National Chocolate Ice Cream Day. Now to some history: On this day in 1665 Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary about the Great Plague of London that houses marked with a red cross meant that someone inside was infected with the plague and must be locked in for 40 days or until death. On this day in 1862 the United States and Britain agreed to suppress the slave trade. On this day in 1892, a Creole shoemaker named Homer Plessy bought a whites-only train ticket in New Orleans. He was arrested and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court in Plessy v. Ferguson. The Court voted 7 to 1 to uphold the “separate but equal” doctrine of segregation. On this day in 1946 the US Supreme Court banned discrimination in interstate travel. Today we celebrate the wisdom of the author Henry Miller who passed in 1980 at the age of 88. He said, “The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware.” “The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.” “Everything hinges on how you look at things.” The last one is “Next to love, friendship, in my opinion, is the most valuable thing life has to offer.’ Abide.
