This day’s name is September 26, 2023. It occurred to me that the only time during each day that I learn something new is now, writing this post. It could be a self-realization (I just had one), a new historical footnote or a different perspective from a wise person who has passed. Just another reason why writing this is both helpful and enjoyable. Today is Johnny Appleseed Day, Lumberjack Day, National Better Breakfast Day, National Dumpling Day, National Pancake Day, National Voter Registration Day, Shamu the Whale Day, World Contraception Day, and World Body Painting Day which reminds me of Fantasy Fest in Key West. Now some history: On this day in 1396 The Ottoman Sultan and a collection of Eruopean Christians fought the Battle of Nicopolis. The Sultan’s army won with 15,000 dead and the Crusader’s lost 10,000. Any crusader captured we promptly beheaded. On this day in 1665 at the height of the Great Plague of London, the death count reached 7,165 for the week. On this day in 1772 New Jersey passes a law requiring a license to practice medicine. On this day in 1907 New Zealand and Newfoundland became dominions within the British Empire. On this day in 1957 the musical ‘West Side Story’ opened in NYC for 732 performances. On this day in 1960 Fidel Castro delivered a 4 hour and 29-minutes long speech at the UN. This is the day in 1962 that the ‘Beverly Hillbillies’ premiered. In 1964 ‘Gilligan’s Island’ premiered. On this day in 1984 President Reagan vetoed sanctions against the Apartheid Government of South Africa. On this day in 2008 Paul Newman died. He will provide today’s quotes: “A man can only be judged by his actions, and not by his good intentions or his beliefs.” “What could be better than to hold your hand out to people less fortunate than you are?” “We all die, just a question of when.” “Being on President Nixon’s enemies list was the highest single honor I’ve ever received.” “I changed my life today. What did you do?” “It’s been a privilege to be here.” I agree with Paul. Abide.
