Here we are in the time/space of 03.22.2021. Yesterday I read an article that said that we could be the only intelligent life in the universe. That means that we are unique among the 700 million trillion planets. And we won’t last. Dinosaurs ruled Earth for 165 million years. I don’t think humans will last that long. So, we are free to do what you want today. In the long run, it makes little difference which is fine with me. Today is As Young As You Feel Day, Gryffindor Pride Day (Harry Potter), National Bavarian Crêpes Day, National Goof Off Day, World Water Day and National Sing Out Day. I’ll just goof off today. Why not? Now the footnotes of history. In 1349 the townspeople of Fulda, Germany massacred Jews, blaming them for the Black Death. As I’ve said over and over again, the Jews of Europe never caught a break. The Black Death is the worst pandemic in history. It killed 1/3rd of the population of Europe. In 1622 on this day, the 1st American Indian (Powhatan) massacre of Europeans in Jamestown Virginia happened. 347 people were killed. In 1873 on this day, slavery was abolished in Puerto Rico. Today is celebrated as Emancipation Day. In 1933 FDR maked wine & beer with up to 3.2% alcohol legal. I grew up with 3.2 beer and it works just fine. This is the day in 1908 that the novelist and short-story writer, mostly Westerns, Louis L’Amour was born. One of his quotes hit home for me. “If you’re going to be a writer, the first essential is just to write. Do not wait for an idea. Start writing something and the ideas will come. You have to turn the faucet on before the water starts to flow.” That’s one of the reasons I do this daily post. This is the day in 1832 that the world lost Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He was a poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theatre director, critic, and amateur artist. Wow. Here are a couple of his exceptional quotes: “Nothing is worth more than this day” and “Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and, if possible, speak a few sensible words.” I think I’ll take his advice. Abide.
