The 22nd Day of October 2023 is here. You know the routine. It’s that time of the day to establish a foundation for the day’s happiness. What are you grateful for? It’s best if you write them down, which I often do by writing this post, but just taking a few seconds to count a few of your blessings will produce benefits. Today is Clean Up the Earth Day, Eat a Pretzel Day, Mother-in-Law Day, National Make a Dogs Day, National Nut Day, and Smart is Cool Day. Now let’s see what happened on this date: On this day in 1633 the Battle of Liaoluo Bay took place. This was the largest navel battle of the 17th Century and fought between the Dutch East India Company and China’s Ming dynasty. What I find interesting is that the Dutch East India Company was a corporation that had its own army and navy and projected power the same way a national state did. On this day in 1836 Sam Houston was inaugurated as the 1st elected President of the Republic of Texas. On this day in 1877 the Blantyre mining disaster in Scotland killed 207 miners. The widows and orphans who were unable to support themselves were evicted by the mine owners and sent to the Poor House. On this day in 1906 3,000 blacks demonstrate and rioted in Philadelphia. On this day in 1926 boxer J. Gordon Whitehead sucker punched magician Harry Houdini in the stomach. Harry would die 9 days later of a ruptured appendix. On this day in 1948 the first Arab Israeli War was fought. This is the day in 1962 that JFK imposed the naval blockade of Cuba beginning the Cuban missile crisis. This is one of those days when quotes are hard to find. I’ve decided to go with plan C and use a philosopher I’ve not read before. Hippocrates said, “If someone wishes for good health, one must first ask oneself if he is ready to do away with the reasons for his illness. Only then is it possible to help him.” “If you are not your own doctor, you are a fool.” “Leave your drugs in the chemist’s pot if you can heal the patient with food.” Last advice: “Walking is a man’s best medicine” Abide.
