The milepost reads 06.16.2021. The road is smooth, the sun is shining, sky is bright blue and the traffic is normal. The storm is behind us and now we can turn on Margaritaville radio, roll down the window and sing along. As Joe Walsh said, “Life’s been good to me so far”. Today is Fresh Veggies Day, No Orange Clothes Day, National Vinegar Day, Wish Fulfillment Day, Sea Turtle Day and National Fudge Day. I would celebrate wish fulfillment day but frankly, all of my wishes have been. I’m grateful to be able to say that. Now to the footnotes: On this day in 1858, Abraham Lincoln delivered his House Divided speech in Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln says, “I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. ” And that is why the Civil War was fought. This day in 1871, the Universities Tests Act 1871 was adopted which allowed students to enter the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and Durham without a religion test, except for those intending to study theology. This is the day in 1933 that the National Industrial Recovery Act was passed in the United States, allowing businesses to avoid antitrust prosecution if they establish voluntary wage, price, and working condition regulations on an industry-wide basis. FDR was working to pull the country out of the Great Depression. Today is the birthday (1313) of Giovanni Boccaccio who was an Italian writer and poet who said, “It’s better to repent what you enjoyed than to repent not having enjoyed anything” and “In this world, you only get what you grab for.” Clearly, Giovanni was a person who pursued happiness. I’ll end this post with a rhyme from Giovanni, “He who is wicked and held to be good, can cheat because no one imagines he would.” Enough for this day. Abide.
