Welcome to February 13, 2024. I didn’t post yesterday because I had an early appointment and got to bed late watching the Chiefs win another Super Bowl. When I woke up this morning It occurred to me that the most important skill I’ve developed from writing this morning post is the ability to control what I think. I mean that literally. I can remove fear, hate, envy, jealousy, anger or any other of the negative emotions of life by simply not thinking about the thoughts that produce them. You can too. Replace “I can’t” with “I will” and think about something else. In cases of emergency, I usually think about Rocky Road Ice Cream on a hot summer day. It works for me. 2/13/2024 is Dream Your Sweet Day, Extraterrestrial Visitor Day, Get a Different Name Day, International Condom Day, International Pancake Day, Kiss Day, Madly In Love With Me Day, Nardi Gras Carnival, National Cheddar Day, National Tortellini Day, Paczki Day, and World Radio Day. Now some historical footnotes. On this day in 1258, Baghjdad. Then a city of 1 million, fell to the Mongols. Tens of thousands were slaughtered and the Islamic Golden Age came to an end. On this day in 1633 Italian astronomer Galileo arrived in Rome for trail before the Inquisition for saying that the Earth revolved around the Sun. On this day in 1945 allied planes bombed Dresden, Germany creating a firestorm that killed over 22,000 people. This is the day in 1954 that Frank Selvey, college basketball player at Furman, scored 100 points in their game against Newberry (149 – 95). Not much defense in that game. On this day in 1971 Vice President Spiro Agnew hit two tee shots into the crowd injuring 2 people. On this day in 2000 the last original “Peanuts” comic strip appeared in newspapers one day after Charles M. Schultz died. I’ll use him for today’s quotes: “In life, it’s not where you go, it’s who you travel with.” “Be yourself. No one can say you’re doing it wrong.” “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” “Only in math can you buy sixty cantaloupes, and no one asks what the hell is wrong with you.” “Friendship isn’t about who you’ve known the longest. It’s all about the friend who comes and stands by your side in bad times.” That’s a good place to end this post. Abide.
