Welcome to the first day of September 2022. This month got it’s name from the Latin word “septem” which means “seven”. It was the 7th month of the Roman calendar which started with the month of March. Now you know. September 1 is American Chess Day, Chicken Boy’s Day, Emma M. Nutt Day, Ginger Cat Appreciation Day, National Cherry Popover Day, National Tofu Day, Pink Cadillac Day, National No Rhyme or Reason Day, and National Burnt Ends Day. I’m pretty sure you don’t have a clue about what Emma M. Nutt Day is. She was the world’s first female telephone operator. Now some more history: On this day in 1715 King Louis XIV of France died after a reign of 72 years, the longest of any European monarch. This is the day in 1752 that the Liberty Bell arrived in Philadelphia. On this day in 1894 a wildfire destroyed the town of Hinckley, Minnesota killing 438 people. The town was rebuilt and the 2010 census reported a population of 1,800. This is the day that the last passenger pigeon died in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo. On this day in 1918 US troops landed in Vladivostok Siberia and stay until 1920. Never knew that. On this day in 1939 Hitler ordered the extermination of mentally ill. He said that wartime “was the bet time for the elimination of the incurably ill”. Whew. We will start the dead people quotes with the singer and actor, Jerry Reed (2008) who said, “When you’re hot you’re hot, when you’re not you’re not.” Not all quotes have to be deep. Next, is Charles A. Beard (1948) who was a history professor who said, “The two great tests of character are wealth and poverty.” I’ll wrap up with a quote from Edgar Rice Burroughs because it’s his birthday. Edgar said, “You are here for but an instant, and you mustn’t take yourself too seriously.” Abide.
