The Earth has entered the time/space of January 25, 2022. Humans have been here for around 6 million of the 4.5 billion years since this planet formed. Dinosaurs were the top of the food chain for 177 million years. They didn’t build any roads or cities or have armies or shoes. The reptilian bran didn’t evolve. On the other hand, they didn’t destroy their environment. That seems to be our job. Moving on. Today is A Room of One’s Own Day, National Irish Coffee Day, National Opposites Day, Speak Up and Succeed Day, Burns Supper and National Plan for Vacation Day. Burns supper is a dinner held to celebrate the Irish poet Robbie Burns birthday. It involves Haggis. Now to the history section of this post. On this day in 1799 the US patented the 1st seeding machine. This was a big deal. 94% of the people living in America lived on farms. 1881 Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell formed the Oriental Telephone Company. In 1915 transcontinental telephone service began: New York to San Francisco. In 1939 Joe Louis KOs John Henry Lewis in the first round for heavyweight boxing title. In 1945 Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the 1st US city to fluoridate its water. Finally, in 1961 Walt Disney released “101 Dalmatians” on this day. This is the day that Gregory of Nazianzus died in 390 AD who was the Archbishop of Constantinople. He said, “Give something, however small, to the one in need. For it is not small to one who has nothing.” Continuing my morning walk among the headstones, I find Robert Burton who was an English writer who died in 1640. He said, “Let thy fortune be what it will, “tis thy mind alone that makes thee poor or rich, miserable or happy.”  He also said, “If you like not my writing, go read something else.” I like his attitude.  Since it’s Robbie Burns birthday, I’ll wrap this one up with a funeral toast made by Mr. Burns: “If there’s another world, he lives in bliss; if there is none, he made the best of this.” Abide.
