This new day is called January 27, 2023. It’s a cold day in Florida but that’s a temporary condition soon to be replaced with 80-egree weather. A few cold days are a reminder of why I fled the North. I’ve got my coffee and I’ve thought about my gratitudes so let’s get this post started. Today is National Big Wig Day, Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day, National Chocolate Cake Day, National Fun at Work Day, National Geographic Day, Punch the Clock Day, Thomas Crapper Day, Vietnam Peace Day, and Pretend to be A Pirate Day. Who doesn’t like chocolate cake and pretending to be a pirate? Moving on: On this day in 1591 the Scottish schoolmaster Dr. John Fian was burned at the stake for witchcraft by order of King Janes VI. On this day in 1825 the US Congress approved the Indian Territory, now known as Oklahoma, clearing the way for the forced relocation of the Eastern Indian tribes now known as the “Trail of Tears”. On this day in 1880 Thomas Edison patented the incandescent lamp. In 1888 on this day the National Geographic Society was founded in Washington DC. On this day in 1915 US Marines invade and occupy Haiti. On this day in 1941 Peruvian ambassador warned the American Ambassador of a Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor. On this day in 1944 the siege of Leningrad was lifted after 880-days, and more than 2 million Russians killed. On this day in 1945 Soviet troops liberate Auschwitz and Birkenau Concentration Camps in Poland. This is the day in 1948 that the 1st tape recorder was sold. On this day we will visit the late, great folk singer Pete Seeger who said, “Being generous of spirit is a wonderful way to live.” “Do you know the difference between education and experience? Education is when you read the fine print; experience is what you get when you don’t.” “A good song reminds us what we’re fighting for.” I’ll end with this one which surprised me: “The American Indians were Communists. They were. Every anthropologist will tell you they were Communists. No rich, no poor. If somebody needed something the community chipped in.” Probably true. Abide.
