It’s finally here! Christmas Eve Day. December 24, 2023. It doesn’t bring the excitement it did when I was 6-years-old, but It’s still one of my favorite days of the year. One of our neighbors would dress up as Santa and go from farm to farm giving gifts to the kids. I lived in a Norman Rockwell painting. Lots of good memories. In addition to Christmas Eve Day, It’s Last-Minute Shopper’s Day and National Eggnog Day. That’s it. Now let’s see what history was made on this day: On this day in 1814 the Treaty of Ghent was signed ending the War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom. Both the United States and the English had aligned themselves with tribes in the Northeast who fought alongside them. This war was about the Untied States trying to expand into the North and the British trying to prevent us from doing so. On this day in 1832 the 1st Negro hospital was founded in Savannah Ga. On this day in 1904 the German colony (SW) in Africa abolished putting young children into slavery. This is the day in 1943 that FDR appointed Eisenhower as the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces. On this day in 1982 Chaminade, which had a student body of only 850 students, beat #1 ranked Virginia 77-72 in the Honolulu holiday basketball classic. On this day in 1992 President George H.W. bush pardoned Caspar Weinberger for his part of the Iran-contra affair. To refresh your memory, the Iran-Contra affair was the secret U.S. arms deal that traded missiles to free some Americans held hostage in Lebanon and funded the conflict in Nicaragua. For today’s quotes, I decided to use Charles Dickens since he wrote “A Christmas Carol”. Charles said, “Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tries, and a touch that never hurts.” “Do all the good you can and make as little fuss about it as possible.” “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.” “A man is lucky if he is the first love of a woman. A woman is lucky if she is the last love of a man.” “We forge the chains we wear in life.” That’s enough for me today. Merry Christmas Eve to everyone. Abide.
