May 24th 2021. Did you watch golf history being made yesterday? Phil won a major at 50 years old. Did you notice that the thousands of people watching weren’t wearing masks? That tells me that normal is back or nearly so. Now I’m watching the news for when I will need a booster shot. Today we have a short list of celebratory events. It’s Asparagus Day, Brother’s Day, International Tiara Day, National Escargot Day and Scavenger Hunt Day. I have two great brothers whom I don’t get to see nearly often enough. Now to the history of this day. This is the day the Irish Rebellion of 1798 led by the United Irishmen against British rule began. This day in 1830 is when “Mary Had A Little Lamb” by Sarah Josepha Hale was first published. This is the day in 1856 that John Brown and abolitionist settlers killed five pro-slavery settlers in Franklin County, Kansas. On this day in 1833 the Brooklyn Bridge opened. In 1899 on this day the first auto repair shop opened in Boston. Finally, in 1951 racial segregation in Washington, D.C. restaurants was ruled illegal. This is Bob Dylan’s birthday. A poet, musician and philosopher (lover of wisdom). Bob said, “People are crazy and times are strange … I used to care but things have changed.” “How many times can a man turn his head, and pretend that he just doesn’t see?” I can relate to both of those quotes/lyrics. This is the day that Duke Ellington passed at the age of 75. Duke said, “There are two kinds of worries – those you can do something about and those you can’t. Don’t spend any time on the latter.” The world would be a happier place if we followed his advice. That’s a wrap on this day. Abide.
