On this day in 1781, 9,000 American and 7,000 French troops begin the siege of Yorktown. This is the day in 1850 that the US Navy abolished flogging as a punishment. On this day in 1868 the Opelousas Massacre took place in St. Landry Parish, LA when a mob of whites attacked and killed 200 blacks. This is the day in 1887 that the Yellow River flooded in China killing between 900,000 and 2 million people making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in history.
