December 10th, 2020 and we are in the countdown for 2021. I am looking forward to 2021, the vaccine and the end of social distancing. I’m going to watch a few Christmas movies over the next couple of weeks. Christmas Story, White Christmas and Elf for sure. Maybe I’ll add Polar Express to the list. I think It’s called a tradition. Today we don’t have many celebratory events to choose from: It’s Dewey Decimal System Day, Festival for the Souls of Dead Whales?, Human Rights Day, Nobel Prize Day and the one I’m picking, National Lager Day. How did dead whale souls get their own day? Going with a cold beer. Now to the history of today: In 1864 General Sherman’s armies reach Savannah and a 12 day siege begins. This is a quote from William Tecumseh Sherman: ” War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.” In 1884 “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain is first published. I’ll finish this post with some quotes by Twain. In 1936 Edward VIII signs Instrument of Abdication, giving up the British throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Wow. 1964 Nobel Peace Prize presented to Dr Martin Luther King Jr. in Oslo. Now back to Mark Twain. If you look up his quotes, you’ll find that he has a lot of them. They’re usually short, insightful and often funny: “If you hold a cat by the tail you learn things you cannot learn any other way.” A lot are on religion “No sinner is ever saved after the first twenty minutes of a sermon.” and politics: “Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself.”. Mark Twain is someone that I would like to spend an afternoon with drinking some lagers with. I’m sure I’d do most of the listening. Have an excellent day and wear the mask. Yesterday over 3,100 dies from the virus. Abide
