The 14th day of June has arrived. I’ve been waiting my entire life for this day to come. I feel the same way about each new, once in my lifetime, day. When Piglet asked Winnie the Pooh “what is your favorite day?” Winnie said “Today”. Winnie and I are on the same page. Why? Today is the Army’s Birthday, Family History Day, Flag Day, International Bath Day, Pop Goes The Weasel Day, National Strawberry Shortcake Day, and National Bourbon Day. I will raise a glass with some Bourbon in it to celebrate June 14th. Now to the way back machine. On this day in 1642 the 1st compulsory education law in America was passed by Massachusetts. On this day in 1916 representatives of eight Allied nations held an economic conference in Paris at which they discussed ways to cripple their enemies economic power during and after the war. This is the day in 1928 that the Republican National Convention, meeting in Kansas City, nominated Herbert Hoover for President. America was in the middle of the Great Depression and it got worse. The next Republican president was in 1952. Finally, on this day in 1967 California Governor Ronald Reagan signed the Therapeutic Abortion Act, legalizing abortions in the state under certain circumstances. Now to the wit and wisdom of people who’ve gone before us. Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin was born on this day in 1811. She said, “The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone.” My own quote on this subject is “may your glad I dids be many and your wish I hads be few”. I’ll end this post with some advice from Buddha who tells us “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” All you really have is today. Spend it wisely. Abide.
