I woke up in the time/space of October 27th, 2021. Happy to be here. For some unknown reason, my first thoughts this morning were about all the hats I’ve worn over the years. I still wear the relationship hats: father, son, husband, brother, friend, Parrot Head, hats but I’ve worn lots and lots of other hats over the years. At the end of the day, there’s really, only me. I’m alone. I’m responsible for what I do, and I get to decide how I’m going to live this day. Each one is a new opportunity to be a better person. Wish me luck. We have a good list for today. It just happens to be American Beer Day. It’s also National Potato Day, Navy Day, National Black Cat Day and Boxer Shorts Day. In the history of this day, in 1682 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was founded by William Penn. On this day in 1702 British troops plundered St. Augustine, Florida. In 1775 the US Navy formed as the Continental Navy which is why it’s Navy Day. In 1810, the United States annexed West Florida from Spain. On this day in 1913 President Woodrow Wilson said that the US will never attack another country. On this day in 1938 DuPont announced its new synthetic polyamide fiber called “nylon”. On this day in 1960 singer Ben E. King recorded “Spanish Harlem” and “Stand By Me”. Today is the birthday of Fran Lebowitz. She’s an author, public speaker, occasional actor known for her sarcasm. Fran said, “Life is something to do when you can’t get to sleep” and “my favorite animal is steak”. I’ll end this post with a quote from James Hillman who died in 2011. He was a psychologist and author of the “Souls Code” which, after reading his quote, I’ll probably buy. James said, “Aging is no accident, it is necessary to the human condition. The older we become, the more our true natures emerge. Thus, the final years have a very important purpose: the fulfillment and confirmation of one’s character.” Abide.
