This is January 21st in the year 2022. As I was loading up the computer to write this post, I noticed that the singer Meat Loaf died yesterday at the age of 74. I’ll start out with one of his quotes: “If you want my views of history, there’s something you should know. The three men I admire most are Curly, Larry, and Mo.“ Meat Loaf was special. Today is National Granola Bar Day, National Hugging Day, National Sweatpants Day, National New England Clam Chowder Day, Appreciate Squirrels Day and One Liner Day. I like them all. Now to what happened back then: On this day in 1677 the 1st medical publication in America was published. It was a pamphlet on smallpox. In 1793 Louis XVI of France was guillotined in Paris because the people of France decided to end their monarchy and hold a revolution. In 1880, the 1st US sewage disposal system was built in Memphis, Tennessee. This is kind of a big deal. Until the 1930s, sewage and rainwater run off went through the same pipe to save money. Memphis was 50 years ahead of its time. On this day in 1942 a Bronx magistrate ruled all pinball machines illegal. It seems that he wasn’t the only one. Pinball machines back then were used often used in gambling and was often controlled by the mob. In 1977 US President Jimmy Carter pardons almost all Vietnam War draft evaders. This is the day in 1950 that George Orwell died at the age of 46. I wasn’t aware that he died so young. He has enough quotes to bring us to the end of this post: “The people will believe what the media tells them they believe.” “Free speech is my right to say what you don’t want to hear.” “The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth.” Everyone believes in the atrocities of the enemy and disbelieves in those committed by his own side, without ever bothering to examine the evidence.” What Orwell said during his life certainly applies to the ones we are now living. I’ll end with another quote from Meat Loaf: “A wasted youth is better by far than a wise and productive old age.” Maybe you can have both. Abide.
