We are now in the time/space of May 9, 2022. To most of us it’s the start of another work week. Since I’m retired, it’s just another Saturday. Will Arnett who is a Canadian actor who you would recognize if you saw his picture said, “I am happy because I’m grateful. I choose to be grateful. That gratitude allows me to be happy.” Will and I are of the same mind. Today is Lost Sock Memorable Day, Tear the Tags Off the Mattress Day, National Butterscotch Brownie Day, National Moscato Day and National Women’s Check-Up Day. Now let’s see what happened way back when. On this day in 1460 in the courtyard of the Episcopal Palace in Arras France, they burned witches. This is the way it worked: Someone would accuse someone else of being a witch. The accused would be tortured until they admitted being in league with the devil and then they would be tortured until they named other witches. May 9, 1865, is the commonly accepted date for the end of the Civil War. On this day in 1960 the US becomes the first country to legalize the birth control pill. As you might expect, conservatives were opposed to it. The first quote for today is from Friedrich Schiller who was a German playwright, poet and philosopher who died in 1805. He said, “It is well for a man when he has learned to endure what he cannot change and to give up with dignity what he cannot retain.” Next is Nelson Algren who was an author who died in 1981 and said, “Never play cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called Mom’s. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own.” I’ll end with a quote from one of the legends of Rock, Little Richard who said, “I don’t get down on nobody else for doing whatever else they do. To each his own.” Have a great day and Abide.
