A new day (October 9, 2022) and a new post. Set my attitude, see what events are designated for this day, find out what happened way back when, and finish up with some quotes from a dead person(s). A good way to start my day. It’s Curious Events Day, Fire Prevention Day, Leif Erikson Day, National Moldy Cheese Day (Yum), National Sneakers Day, Scrubs Day, Submarine-Hoagie-Hero-Grinder Day, and International Beer and Pizza Day. I love moldy blue cheese, subs from the White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City, and my own pizza. Now to history: On this day in 1000 Lief Ericson became the first white person to “discover” America. On this day in 1290 the last 6,000 Jew expelled by King Edward I left England. On this day in 1781 Americans under George Washington and the French under Rochambear began the bombardment of Yorktown, the last battle of the American Revolutionary War. Without the support of the French, American may not have won its independence. On this day in 1855 Isaac Singer patented the sewing machine. On this day in 1865 the first underground pipeline for carrying oil was laid in Pennsylvania. This is the day in 1888 that the Washington Monument opened for the public. This is the day in 1941 that President FDR approved the atomic program that would become the Manhattan Project. In 1946 on this day the first electric blanket was sold for $39.99. The first quote from a dead person is from Oskar Schindler who saved the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust. Oskar said, “I am the conscience of all those who knew something – but did nothing” and “I had to help them. There was no choice.” Next is Clare Boothe Luce who was a politician, ambassador and writer who died in 1987. Clare said, “What generally passes for ‘thought’ among the majority of mankind is the time one takes out to rearrange one’s prejudices” and “You see few people here in America who really wcare very much about living a Christian life in a democratic world.” The last quote for today comes from Anna Freud who was the youngest child of Sigmund Freud and also a psychoanalyst. Anna said, “Thins are not as we would like them to be. There is only one way to deal with it, namely to try and be all right oneself.” I agree. Abide.
