What will we make of this new day? It’s February 11th 2020. We get one chance to make it a good day and then, it’s disappears into the mist and becomes a yesterday. Here are the commissions suggestions: It’s Extraterrestrial Culture Day. I believe that we are effectively alone in the universe because even if their are extraterrestrials somewhere, they’re too far away to matter. Not going to pick that one. It’s also Get Out Your Guitar Day, Grandmother Achievement Day, National Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day, National Peppermint Patty Day, Satisfied Staying Single Day and National Make A Friend Day. Several of these are interesting. The “spilled milk” day tells me that you need to let go of things and move on. I try to do that. I don’t have a real guitar, but I do have real ukuleles and I will pick one up and play today. I’ll go with that. Now to the what happened on this date in history part of this post. In 1794 the 1st session of US Senate open to the public. In 1809 and this date, Robert Fulton patents the steamboat. In 1812 Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry signs a redistricting bill resulting in the first “gerrymander”. For those of you who don’t know what a gerrymander is, it’s when you design voting districts to favor your party in the next election. In 1852, the first British public female toilet opens on Bedford Street in London. In 1896 Oscar Wilde’s “Salome” premieres in Paris. I bring this up to give you a quote from Mr. Wilde, “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.” In 1942 on this date the “Archie” comic book debuts. In 1963 American chef Julia Child’s show “The French Chef” premieres. You can still watch some of these shows on YouTube and learn. She said, “I was 32 when I started cooking; up until then, I just ate.” Finally, in 1978 China lifts a ban on Aristotle, Shakespeare, & Dickens. This is the birthday (1847) of Thomas Edison. He said, “There’s a way to do it better – find it.” And that, my friends, is how an inventor thinks. In 1650 on this date RenĂ© Descartes, French philosopher “I think therefore I am”, stops thinking due to pneumonia at 53. Now, What will we make of this new day? I’m off to find out. Abide
