This 24 hour period happens to be named March 31st, 2021. The last day of a pretty good month. So much of what makes our lives enjoyable is our social relationships. Finally, we’re getting closer to where we were before the pandemic. Almost all of my friends in the Villages have received their shots. Normal is almost here for us. Today is César Chávez Day. He said, “The fight is never about grapes or lettuce. It is always about people.” It’s also Clams On The Half Shell Day, National Crayon Day, Manatee Appreciation Day, National “She’s Funny That Way” Day, National Tater Day and National Farm Worker Day. A tip of my hat to the people who work on farms so that we can have food on our table. Now a history lesson: In 1717 A sermon on “The Nature of the Kingdom of Christ” by Benjamin Hoadly, provoked the Bangorian Controversy. I’m betting you have no idea what the Bangorian Controversy was. There were two philosophies at the time. One was that God selected the rulers, aka the Kings and Princes and the other was that they were just ordinary men without divine guidance. Those competing philosophies still exist today. In 1850 the US population was 23,191,876 of which 3,638,808 of 15.7% were African American. This was the day in 1889 that the Eiffel Tower opened. Finally, on this day in 1972, the rum ration in the Royal Canadian Navy ended. A sad day for sailors. Today is the birthday of Christopher Walken who said, “Ive Got A Fever And The Only Prescription Is More Cowbell.” That’s my favorite SNL routine. This is also the birthday of the philosopher René Descartes who said, “The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest minds of past centuries.” That is the reason I always enjoy looking for quotes for this post. Now I’m done for today. Abide.
