11.22.2023 is the numeric representation for today. I’m sure that in kitchens across America there will be plenty of make ahead dishes prepared for tomorrow’s culinary extravaganza. Now to history: On this day in 1542 the King of Spain declared the “New Laws” against slavery in America. After Columbus, Spaniards rushed to the Americas to enslave and kill indigenous people to take their land and their wealth. The King’s vision was to expand the Spanish empire and make the indigenous people subjects and not slaves. The New Laws didn’t stop the exploitation and were suspended. On tis day in 1903 Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt were engaged. Yes, her maiden name was Roosevelt. On this day in 1942 Hitler ordered Rommel’s Africa Korps to fight to the last man. On this day in 1943 the British RAF began their air bombing campaign intended to turn Berlin into a pile of rubble. On this day in 1955 RCA paid $35,000 to Sun Records for Elvis Presley’s contract.
