Time quietly became May 7th, 2021 at the stroke of midnight. A new opportunity for each of us. We get another day of life. The older I get the more I realize that we’re not here for a long time. I refuse to take this day for granted. It’s too special. After all, it’s International Tuba Day, International Space Day, National Cosmopolitan Day, National Roast Leg of Lamb Day National Public Gardens Day and No Pants Day. The only time I change from shorts to pants is when it’s below 60 degrees and that doesn’t happen often. This is the day in 1355 that 1,200 Jews of Toledo, Spain were killed. I couldn’t find a reason. On this day in 1718 the city of New Orleans was founded by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. Laissez les bons temps rouler! (Let the good times roll). On this day in 1840, a tornado struck Natchez, Mississippi, kills 317. In 1914 the US Congress established Mother’s Day. On this day in 1915 the RMS Lusitania was sunk by German submarine off the southern coast of Ireland; 1198 lives lost. This act was one of the primary reasons for the US to enter WWI. In 1970 on this day, “Long & Winding Road” became the Beatles’ last American release. This is the day that we lost Elbert Hubbard in 1915. He was a writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher. I like his quotes. Short, simple and easy to relate to: “Life is just one damned thing after another.” “The happiness of this life depends less on what befalls you than the way in which you take it.” and “The recipe for perpetual ignorance is: Be satisfied with your opinions and content with your knowledge.” I would like to spend an afternoon sitting in a bar with him. Enough to ponder for this day. Have a good one (yes, it’s up to you). Abide.
