We are now flying (448,000 mph) through the area in space designated as August 20 2020. We are able to do this because we have a thin layer of atmosphere to protect us from the vacuum of space, and the radiation given off by the Sun. I’m amazed that life is possible here and profoundly grateful to be alive. Realizing how lucky I am is a good way to start each day. We have a short list of holidays today: National Bacon Lover’s Day, National Chocolate Pecan Pie Day, National Lemonade Day and Radio Day. Lots of good possibilities. Now to history: On this day in 1191 Crusader King Richard the 1st kills 3,000 Muslim prisoners in Akko (now known as Acre Israel). Hard to imagine. In 1619 on this day the 1st known African Americans in English North America land at Point Comfort (Fort Monroe), Virginia and are then sold or traded into servitude. This is the day in 1866 President Andrew Johnson formally declares US Civil War over. On this day in 1913 the 1st pilot to parachute from an aircraft happens in France. This is the birthday (1890) of American writer H. P. Lovecraft who said, “I am disillusioned enough to know that no man’s opinion on any subject is worth a damn unless backed up with enough genuine information to make him really know what he’s talking about.” Well put Mr. Lovecraft. This is also the day in 2017 that we lost Jerry Lewis who said, “I don’t want to be remembered. I want the nice words when I can hear them.” That’s a reminder to all of us to tell the people we care about how much we love them. With that thought, have a good day and be sure to Abide.
