We have reached the last day of May 2022. An Ok month it turns out. The Covid pandemic is still here. I’ve seen articles that predict that everyone will eventually catch it. I need another booster which I may get this week. One of my doctors suggests getting boosted every 3 months. Moving on. May 31 is National Meditation Day, National Smile Day, Speak in Complete Sentences Day, What You Think Upon Grows Day, National Macaroon Day and World Parrot Day. Now a few historical footnotes. On this day in 1759 The Province of Pennsylvania banned all theater productions. The law was adopted in response to pressure from religious groups, particularly Baptists, who found theatrical performances immoral. This is the day in 1868 that the 1st Memorial Day parade was held in Ironton, Ohio. This is the day in 1879 that Madison Square Garden opened in New York, which is named after 4th President James Madison. In 1884 Dr. John Harvey Kellogg patented “flaked cereal”. This is the day in 1900 US troops arrived in Beijing to help put down the Boxer Rebellion. The “Boxers” was a movement to kick foreigners out of China. Their real beef was with the Christian missionaries and Chinese converts. When it was all over, 100,000 people died. Time to listen to dead people. Timothy Leary, psychologist, and drug advocate died in 1998. He said, “If you want to change the way people respond to you, change the way you respond to people” and “You’re only as young as the last time you changed your mind.” Next is the French artist Louise Bourgeois who died in 2010 at 98. She said, “One must accept the fact that others don’t see what you do.” I agree with her. Last is the boxer Jack Dempsey who stopped living in 1983. Jack said, “A champion is someone who gets up when he can’t” and, “Honey, I just forgot to duck.” Abide.
