June 2, 2021 is here. I want to start by being grateful to everyone one who acknowledged my birthday. It’s a miracle that I/we exist. Everyone of our ancestors had to get busy to create our unique lineage. The odds against that happening are a ten followed by 2,640,000 zeroes to 1. Anyone who tells you they are unlucky, doesn’t understand that they’ve won the biggest prize in the universe: life. This is American Indian Citizenship Day, I Love My Dentist Day, National Rocky Road Day, National Rotisserie Chicken Day and National Bubba Day. When we became grandparents, we picked the names we’d like to be called by our grandchildren. Waste of time because our first one, Colten decided I was Bubba and that was that. I get two special days in a row. Who knew? This is the day in 455 that King Gaiseric and the Vandals sacked and looted Rome for 14 days. On this day in 1763 was Pontiac’s Rebellion. At what is now Mackinaw City, Michigan, Chippewas capture Fort Michilimackinac by diverting the garrison’s attention with a game of lacrosse, then chasing a ball into the fort. Sneaky! On this day in 1989 10,000 Chinese soldiers were blocked by 100,000 citizens in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, protecting students demonstrating for democracy. This is the day that the English poet and gardener Vita Sackville-West passed in 1962. She said, “There is nothing more lovely in life than the union of two people whose love for one another has grown through the years, from the small acorn of passion, into a great rooted tree” That’s my observation too. This is also the day that one of my favorite R&B musicians, Bo Diddley passed in 2008. Bo said, “Don’t let your mouth write a check that your tail can’t cash.” Good advice. That’s enough for today. Hope your day is half as good as the one I intend to live. Abide.
