This is August 15th, 2021. Yesterday there was a news story about a father who assaulted a teacher on his son’s first day of school because the school gave him to wear a mask. I feel sorry for the child who has this father and it also reminded me of how fortunate I am to have the parents I had. I hope my kids feel that way too. Today is Best Friends Day, Relaxation Day, National Failures Day, Chant At The Moon Day, I Love Cowboys And Cowgirls Day and National Lemon Meringue Pie Day. Pie sounds excellent to me. Now to history. In 1620 on this day the Mayflower set sail from Southampton, England, with 102 Pilgrims. On this day in 1824 freed American slaves established the Republic of Liberia on the West African coast. In 1876 on this day, the government started to forcibly remove Indians from the Black Hills after gold was discovered. In 1939 on this day the Wizard of Oz premiered in Hollywood. This is also the day in 1945 that we declared victory over Japan. In 1935 on this day, Will Rogers died. I’ll end this post with some of this Dust Bowl philosopher’s observations: “ There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.” “The problem in America isn’t so much what people don’t know; the problem is what people think they know that just ain’t so.” “ I know worrying works, because none of the stuff I worried about ever happened.” And “Don’t let yesterday use up too much of today.” What fun it would have been to have Will as one of your drinking buddies. Enough for today. Abide.
