Each day the celestial clock moves us another day closer to the end of 2020. This day is 12.21.2020. In a normal year, I would be able took back at my trips, the concerts, the parties, friends, etc.. I knew I was living a fantastic life. The pandemic confirmed it. Absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder. When “normal” arrives next year, I’m gonna party like it’s 2019. Until then, It’s Anne and Samantha Day, Crossword Puzzle Day, Humbug Day, National Coquito Day, National Hamburger Day (my pick) and National French Fried Shrimp Day. There are lots more events for this day but this is enough for this post. Anne Frank and Samantha Smith get a day to remember them. Everyone knows about Anne Frank but maybe not Samantha who was the young girl who wrote a letter to Yuri Andropov in November of 1982, asking him if he was going to start a nuclear war with the United States. It was a big deal at the time. Now to the history of today: In 1891, the 1st game of basketball, based on rules created by James Naismith, was played by 18 students in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1909, the 1st junior high school is established in Berkeley California. In 1929 Coco the Clown first appears for Bertram Mills Circus in Manchester, England. Why did we name a Florida Beach after him? Today is Walter Hagen’s birthday (1892). He was a golfer who won 11 major titles. Walter said, “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.” and “Nobody remembers who came in second.” This is also the date that Old Blood and Guts General George S. Patton died at the age of 60. He said, “We herd sheep, we drive cattle, we lead people. Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way.” That’s enough. Be careful. You’re important. Abide.
