September 13th, 2021. Another new day awaits. I woke up dreaming about successful events in my past to a present that has few battles to be fought, challenges to be met or victories to be achieved. I’m fortunate to be retired and in good health. I try to remind myself everyday how lucky I am. Today is Bald Is Beautiful Day, Fortune Cookie Day, Kids Take Over The Kitchen Day, Peanut Day, I’m On Top Of It Day, International Chocolate Day, National Defy Superstition Day, Snack A Pickle Day and Positive Thinking Day. I try to celebrate Positive Thinking every day. Now it’s time to see what happened on this day. In 1501 Michelangelo began work on his statue of David. On this day in 1789, the 1st loan is made to the United States Government by a NYC bank. In 1847 on this day, American troops captured Mexico City in the Mexican – American War (1846 – 1846). When the dust cleared, Mexico had lost 1/3rd of its territory including nearly all of present-day California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. This is the date in 1922 that the Straw Hat Riot began in New York City as people protest the right to wear straw hats beyond the accepted end date of September 15. It seems that if you wore a straw hat after the 15th, it would probably have been grabbed off your head a crushed. There actually was a riot and some people went to jail. Wow. This is the day in 1592 that the Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne died at the age of 59. The first quote listed for him is “When I quote others I do so in order to express my own ideas more clearly”. I guess that’s why I end this post with whispers from the graveyard. Here are a few more from Michel: “My life has been full of terrible misfortunes most of which never happened”. “Sometimes it is a good choice not to choose at all” and “The only thing certain is nothing is certain”. And that my friends, ends my post for today. Abide.
