The tiny rock on the edge of the Milky Way galaxy that we call home has now reached the time space of October 19, 2021. It’s only taken us 4.5 billion years to get here. Let’s start this post with something you probably aren’t aware of: Neutrinos. They’re one of the lightest subatomic particles. They come from the Big Bang and fly unobstructed throughout the universe. About 100 trillion of them pass through our bodies every second. Wow. Glad they don’t tickle going through. Today is Dress Like A Dork Day, Evaluate Your Life Day (always a good thing to do), Multicultural Diversity Day, New Friends Day, International Seafood Bisque Day, Rainforest Day and my pick, International Gin And Tonic Day. I sure most of my friends will gladly celebrate with me. Now to the history of this day. In 1781 on this day, at Yorktown, British General Cornwallis signed the terms of surrender ending the Revolutionary War. On this day in 1812 Napoleon Bonaparte and his army began their retreat from Moscow. His army had gone from 500,000 soldiers to 100,000. On this day in 1951 President Truman formally ends state of war with Germany. This is the day in 1960 that Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested in the Atlanta Sit-in. Today is the late Sylvia Browne’s birthday. She was a psychic. Sylvia said, “Look to what you have around you and be grateful instead of searching for more. All you take with you when you leave this world is love, friendship and good deeds.” Seems like good advice to me. This is the day in 1745 that Jonathan Swift who was an Irish satirist, essayist, poet and cleric stopped living. I’ll end with a couple of his quotes: “You should never be ashamed to admit you have been wrong. It only proves you are wiser today than yesterday”. “Every day is an opportunity to make a new happy ending. May you live all the days of your life.” That’s a good Irish toast. Abide.
