We have just passed the 10.22.2021 milepost on this highway. One more day done and another new one waiting to be experienced. The question is, how do I make this one different and special from the last one? Always the same question, always the same answer: pay attention to the details. Look for Waldo. Thank the cashier at the store by their name. They are wearing name tag. Today is different, today is unique. Today is Eat A Pretzel Day, Clean Up The Earth Day, National Nut Day, National Color Day, Smart Is Cool Day (can’t disagree with that) and Wombat Day. In case you don’t know, a Wombat is a short-legged, muscular quadrupedal marsupial native to Australia so it might be difficult to find one to hug today. I’ll eat some peanuts. Now the history. This is the day in 1861 that the 1st telegraph line linking West & East coasts was completed. On this day in 1877 the Blantyre mining disaster in Scotland killed 207 miners. The widows and orphans who were unable to support themselves were evicted by the mine owners and sent to the Poor House. This is the day in 1897 that the world’s first car dealer opened in London. In 1907 that the Ringling Brothers Greatest Show on Earth bought the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Finally, in 1962 on this day, President Kennedy addresses the nation about Russian missile bases in Cuba and imposed a naval blockade on Cuba, beginning the Cuban missile crisis. Today is Timothy Leary’s birthday. He was a psychologist and advocate of using psychedelic drugs. He said, “Take responsibility for making your own life beautiful” and “If you don’t like what you’re doing, you can always pick up your needle and move to another groove.” This is the day that Sir Kingsley Amis who was an English novelist, poet and critic stopped living in 1995. I like this quote “The first, indeed the only, requirement of a diet is that it should lose your weight without reducing your alcoholic intake by the smallest degree.” I believe, based on personal experience, that he has found the reason that diets don’t work. Have an excellent day. Abide.
