Here we are: 01/22/2022. Do you know how many stars there are in the universe? 200 billion trillion that we know of, but we can only see around 9,000 in the night sky. Do you know that your body has 30 trillion cells in it and that each one of your cells contains a 100 trillion atoms? I guess you can say that I live in a constant state of “Wow”. It’s an amazing place. Today is Come In From The Cold Day, Dance Of The Seven Veils Day, National Polka Dot Day, Roe V. Wade Day, National Hot Sauce Day, National Blonde Brownie Day and Celebrate Life Day. I celebrate life every day. That’s why I write this post. Let’s see what happened on this date in prior years: In 1816 Lord Byron completed the poems “Parisina” and “Siege of Corinth”. I only bring up this fact to segue to a quote: “Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.” In 1879 the Battle of Rorke’s Drift was fought. A British garrison of 150 held off 3,000-4,000 Zulu warriors. They made a movie of it (Zulu) in 1964 starring Michael Caine. If you haven’t seen it, do so. It’s a great movie. In 1908 Katie Mulcahey was arrested for lighting a cigarette, violating the 1-day old “Sullivan Ordinance” which banned women from smoking in public, and was fined $5. Appearing before the judge she stated “I’ve got as much right to smoke as you have. I never heard of this new law, and I don’t want to hear about it. No man shall dictate to me.” Finally, this was the day in 1973 Roe vs Wade was decided by the Supreme Court. This is the day in 1973 that Lyndon Johnson, 36th President died. I consider him to be the most powerful president of my lifetime based on what he accomplished. Here are a few of his quotes: “Until justice is blind of color, until education is unaware of race, until opportunity is unconcerned with the color of men’s skins, emancipation will be a proclamation but not a fact.” “Better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in.” “The guns and bombs, the rockets and the warships, are all symbols of human failure.” I’ll end with “I’m going to build the kind of nation that President Roosevelt hoped for, President Truman worked for, and President Kennedy died for.” No one could say that Johnson didn’t have high ambitions. Enough for today. Abide.
