This is the last day of June on this trip around the Sun. At the end of this day, this unique small planet with a thin atmosphere we call Earth will have traveled 48 million miles through space in June. I’m thankful that nothing was in our path because this rock doesn’t have a steering wheel. June 30 is International Asteroid Day, National Meteor Day, National Outfit of the Day (OOTD) Day, National Bomb Pop Day, National Handshake Day, Social Media Day, and National Organization of Women Day. Now to the history part of this post. On this day in 1377 the foundation stone was laid for the church in Ulm Germany. The church was completed 513 years later (1890) and is the tallest church in the world (530 feet). On this day in 1665 the number of people who died in London from the Great Plague during June was recorded as 6,137. On this day in 1834 Congress created the Indian Territory which is now Oklahoma. On this day in 1864 Lincoln sighed the Yosemite Grant Act bestowing 200,000 acres to California establishing the first state-controlled park. This is the day in 1906 that congress passed the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. In 1934 on this day Hitler staged a bloody purge, known as the “Night of Long Knives” to eliminate those leaders in the Nazi Party who were opposed to him.  This is a tough day for quotes. When I can’t find anything interesting, I usually go to the Stoic philosophers like Marcus Aurelius who was the Emperor of Rome from 161 to 180. Marcus said, “Our life is what our thoughts make it.” “If it’s not right, don’t do it.  If it’s not true, don’t say it.” “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive, to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” Marcus Aurelius is referred to as the “last of the good emperors”. Abide.
