We’ve made it all the way to the 2nd day of the year. We’re riding this small insignificant rock with a thin layer of atmosphere on the edge of the Milky Way. We are effectively alone in the universe. We’re on our own. It’s all up to us. We should probably treat Earth better than we do. It’s all we’ve got. Those are my “big” thoughts for today. Now let’s get to the personal level: What are you going to make of your day? The Commission has some suggestions: It’s National Buffet Day, Happy Mew Year for Cats Day, National Run it Up the Flagpole and See if Anybody Salutes It Day, National Cream Puff Day, National Science Fiction Day and Swiss Cheese Day. Is there a Golden Corral in your near future? There do have amazing pot roast. Now the history of this day: In 1890 Alice Sanger becomes the 1st female White House staffer. At 24 she became a personal assistant to President Harrison and the First Lady. In 1903 US President Theodore Roosevelt shuts down the post office in Indianola Miss, for refusing to accept its appointed postmistress because she was black. In 1906 Willis Carrier receives a US patent for the world’s first air conditioner. If not discovered, nobody would live in Florida. In 1934 the 1st state liquor stores open in Pennsylvania. In 1960 Senator John F. Kennedy, announces his candidacy for the US Presidency. I suggest you search on his quotes and spend a few moments reading, “Things do not happen. Things are made to happen.” This is the birthday (1920) of Isaac Asimov which is probably why today is Science Fiction day. I’ve read everything he wrote. He said “I don’t expect to live forever, but I do intend to hang on as long as possible.” That’s my plan too. I’ll end this post with another quote from John F. Kennedy “Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children’s future. And we are all mortal.” With those wise words, I’ll start my brand new, never been used day. Abide
