It is December 28th, 2023. Another good day awaits. Let’s get started and see what we will find. I’ve taken a moment to think about what I’ve got, and what I don’t want and don’t have. I feel grateful. My attitude is adjusted to positive. Off we go: Today is Call a Friend Day, Endangered Species Act Day, National Card Playing Day, National Chocolate Day, National Download Day, National Short Film Day, and Pledge of Allegiance Day. We are also in the middle of It’s About Time Week. I’ll go with Chocolate Day. Now let’s find something in the history of this day that’s interesting: On this day in 1732 Benjamin Franklin, under the pseudonym Richard Saunders published the first edition of “Poor Richard’s Almanack.” There are 3 of these books left in existence and the last one sold at auction for $557,000. On this day in 1835 the 2nd Seminole War between the U.S. and the mixed tribes and escaped slaves who became known as the “Seminoles” began with the Dade Massacre in Sumter Country Florida (where I now live) when Seminoles ambushed and killed 107 Army troops out of 110 marching to Fort King. On this day in 1915 the British decided to institute compulsory military service. They also decided to take single men before married ones. On this day in 1958 “The Greatest Fame Ever Played” took place when the Baltimore Colts won the 26th NFL Championship against the New York Giants 23-17. This was the first sudden death overtime game in NFL history and 17 future members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame played in it. On this day in 2004 the American writer, critic and intellectual Susan lee Sontag died. She is my quotes source for today. Susan said, “Few ever see what is not already inside their heads.” “The fear of becoming old is born of the recognition that one is not living now the life that one wishes.” “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” “10 percent of any population is cruel, no matter what, and 10 percent is merciful, no matter what, and the remaining 80 percent can be moved in either direction.” “The really important thing is not to reject anything.” That’s enough for this day. Abide.
