We are now in the time/space of September 21, 2020. It’s the start of a new week for those of you who work for a living. To those of us who have retired, it’s just another Saturday. In human history, the concept of retirement is new. During the 18th century, the life expectancy was between 26 and 40 years so there were few people who lived long enough. Rome gave a pension to retired soldiers. Retirement as we know it has only been around 100 years or so. I’m happy to sip from this cup of joy. Today is International Day of Peace, Miniature Golf Day, National Chai Day, National Pecan Cookie Day and Pause The World Day. A short list for today. I’ll celebrate the cookie. On this day in 1984 the Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser becomes the 1st successful daily newspaper in the United States. This is the day in 1792 that the National Convention passes a proclamation announcing the formal abolition of the French monarchy. On this day in 1827, according to Joesph Smith Jr., the angel Moroni gave him a record of gold plates, one-third of which Joseph translated into The Book of Mormon. To that I say, “really?” Finally, on this day in 1897 NY Sun runs famous “Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus” editorial. Search on it and read it. It’s short. Today is the birthday of H. G. Wells. He said, “Adapt or perish, now as ever, is nature’s inexorable imperative.” This is the day in 50 bc that the Roman poet Virgil stopped living. Virgil said, “The world cares very little about what a man or woman knows; it is what a man or woman is able to do that counts.” I fully agree with both of these quotes. Be safe as you navigate this new day. Abide.
