Today is May 27, 2022. “Another day is paradise” is an often-used phrase where I live. According to Merriam-Webster, “Paradise” is a place or state of bliss, felicity, or delight. “Felicity” is the quality or state of being happy. I’ve learned a new word to describe my state of being. Cool. Today happens to be Cellophane Tape Day. Why? I have no idea. It’s also National Grape Popsicle Day, Old-Time Player Piano Day, National Road Trip Day and Nothing to Fear Day. Now to our history lesson of today. On this day in 1679, the Habeas Corpus Act was passed in England, strengthening a person’s right to challenge unlawful arrest and imprisonment. If you were alive in 1896 and living in St. Louis, it was a bad day. A tornado hit, killing 255 and leaving thousands homeless. This is the day in 1907 that the Bubonic Plague came to San Francisco. I wasn’t aware of that. On this day in 1933 Walt Disney’s short film “3 Little Pigs” was released. It received the Academy Award for Best Animated film in 1934. This is also the day in 1969 that Walt Disney World construction began at Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Today’s first dead person is Victor Kiam who died in 2001. Victor said, “Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin.” Next is Cornelius Vanderbilt who was born on this day in 1794. Cornelius said, “Never tell anyone what you are going to do till you’ve done it.” I’ll end this post with some quotes from Hubert Humphrey who was born on this day in 1911. Hubert said, “The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously” and “The way we treat our children in the dawn of their lives and the way we treat our elderly in the twilight of their lives is a measure of the quality of a nation.” Abide.
