It’s now the 24th day of September 2020. Lots of chaos. Too much to keep track of. Soon we will slip into the month of October and then we will see if our present pandemic follows the patter of 1918. My hope is that it doesn’t because October and November were pretty bad. I’m hopeful that we will do a better job than our ancestors did. That is the future and we are in the present and this day is the Festival Of The Latest Novelties, Kiss Day, National Punctuation Day?, National Cherry’s Jubilee Day, National Horchata Day (Mexican rice drink), National Blue Bird Of Happiness Day and Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving. Schwenkfelder is a religious sect of Germans who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1730s. When some of them arrived they had a thanksgiving service and ate the provisions they had: water, bread, butter and apple butter. There are some that still celebrate it today. I’d like to try the horchata myself. This is the day in 1789 that the US Federal Judiciary Act passes, creating a six-person Supreme Court. Washington nominated John Jay to be the 1st Chief Justice. This is the day in 1869 known as Black Friday when a Wall St panic when the value of gold plummeted. On this day in 1934, 2,500 fans see Babe Ruth’s farewell Yankee appearance at Yankee Stadium. This is the day in 1952 that KFC opens it’s first franchise in Salt Lake City. Finally, on this day in 1976 “Oh! Calcutta!” opens at Edison Theater NYC for 5,959 performances, Broadway’s longest-running musical revue. I think the fact that there were naked people on stage had something to do with it. Today is John Marshall’s birthday. He was the 4th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He said, “What is it that makes us trust our judges? Their independence in office and manner of appointment.” This is also the day that Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) stopped life. The Dr. said, “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” That’s a hard quote to beat. So, there it is. Have a good day and be careful. Abide.
