April 30, 2020. This month now comes to an end on a slightly positive note. The University of Oxford may be on the verge of a vaccine. That would be nice. Normal could be 6 months away. Too soon to celebrate but not too soon to cross your fingers. In the meantime, it’s Bugs Bunny Day, Hairstyle Appreciation Day, National Honesty Day, National Bubble Tea Day, International Jazz Day, National Oatmeal Cookie Day, National Raisin Day, Poem in your Pocket Day and Spank Out Day (whos your daddy?). I think it makes sense to put the raisins in the oatmeal cookie while reading the comics and sipping bubble tea. Now, to history. This is the day in 1315 French chamberlain Enguerrand de Marigny is hanged on the public gallows at Montfaucon after being convicted of sorcery. This is an interesting story, Enguerrand was the Kings tax collector and hated by pretty much everyone but the king. The sorcery charge was bogus and the trial was speedy and justice was rendered immediately. Problem solved. In 1864 New York becomes the 1st state to charge a hunting license fee. On this day in 1904 the Ice cream cone makes its debut at St. Louis World’s Fair. Lastly, on this day in 1952 Mr Potato Head is the 1st toy advertised on television. Today is the birthday (1961) of Detroit Piston guard Isaiah Thomas who said, “I’ve always believed no matter how many shots I miss, I’m going to make the next one.” This is also the day that Adolph Hitler committed suicide in 1945. He said, “The great masses of the people will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one.” He also said, “What good fortune for governments that the people do not think.” Both scary and accurate. Ah well. That’s it for today. Enjoy a cookie today. I will. Stay safe. Abide.
